Creative Internship: User Centred Web Design & Development

Hutchison Vale Community Sports Club - Website Redesign

Run by a team of some 70 volunteers, Hutchison Vale Community Sports Club have been operating in the west side of Edinburgh since 1940 and we continue to be one of the premier youth football clubs in Scotland. We operate football training & matches for approx 200 young  people (from ages 4 right through to the “senior” side operating in the East of Scotland league)  and have in  recent years  introduced a successful Ladies Section.

The Ethos of the club is development of football and personal skills through a structured and team-based sports environment, which over the years has seen numerous trophies won and many ex-players have been - or are currently playing - in the professional game, However, the Club also remains true to its original ethos – reflected in our motto “In Friendship”. This sees us having involvement within our local “core” communities of Saughton, Drumbrae and Chesser. For example, distribution of Xmas food hampers to OAPs, community fundraising at local Gala Days and the annual Charity match (which last June raised over £3k for the Edinburgh Sick Kids Hospital).

The Club is currently looking to ambitious plans to build an astroturf pitch for community use and as we progress achieve the much sought after “Level 4” status within the game. However, we need to address our website – both to make it more useable, useful and attractive – but also to have it as something much more in keeping with our attempts as a Club always to have high standards. This especially at this time when hope to progress to Level 4 and fund/ build a new facility for community/athletics and football use.
 http://www.hutchisonvale.com/modules/page/page.aspx?type=home&mid=10794&pmid=0

Our website needs urgent attention, including giving it a complete review, rationalisation and modernisation. It has an old format (devised by the one volunteer we have with website skills); which has little changed over the years. The website tries to serve many functions and user groups: including external  contacts, parents, fixture scheduling, fundraising,  news, statutory organisations (e.g SFA, Discloure Scotland) and prospective players. The list also includes providing details and information to each of the committees who run the 15 or so teams across the club. The first task associated with a website re-design is probably an analysis of current (and other) users (quantity of visitors, needs etc) so that the website can successfully meet the requirements of the different user groups. The ultimate aim of the work would be to have a professional looking but exciting  website, which was easily maintained while being accessible to the range of user groups.
